Tardus has supported many different charitable organizations over the years, raising thousands of dollars and helping to bring awareness to many great causes. Those of you who know Chris and I can appreciate the soft spot in our hearts for children’s foundations and so I’m sure it came as no surprise that we chose CASA Hawaii for the 2016 WRC Gala charity.
What may surprise you, however, is that over 600,000 children pass through the U.S. foster care and family court system annually coming from abusive and neglectful homes. Fortunately, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), working primarily with volunteers, fills this desperate need to find safe and permanent homes for these children, making it less likely that they will be shuffled through the foster care system and more likely for them to succeed in school.
I remember the first time I learned of the tremendous need of these children over a decade ago when one of our Tardus members brought two children with them to a meeting. They were fostering a brother and sister who had been abandoned. Tardus was fairly new at that point and Chris and I had no way to adopt them at the time, but we later learned that they had been adopted by a great couple which I was thankful to hear. Those kids, while suffering from neglect, were adorable and just melted my heart, forever being forged into my memory. It truly pains my heart to hear stories like theirs, but solidifies for us how great the need is to help.
Before making the decision to sponsor CASA in 2016, I showed one of CASA’s videos to my two daughters and asked if they wanted to help those kids - to which they anxiously replied “YES!” Within only a few hours selling snacks from a makeshift stand outside our home, inviting their friends, and making signs for CASA, they raised over $200! Knowing that kids don’t generally think about how other kids may be struggling and watching first hand our daughters grow up to be generous adults, we ended up matching what they raised for CASA and we couldn’t be more proud of them.
Charities like CASA Hawaii definitely put things in perspective for us all and remind us to show gratitude for the things we have and help to support those who are less fortunate. Every dollar helps and can make a great impact on these children who are suffering from such unfortunate circumstances. From our heart to yours, thank you for your support.
